CHAPTER 24

When she returned home to her apartment that night, she let herself in through the front door and nearly crashed into Jamie, who was on his way out. Dressed in his black uniform, he was headed downtown to the building where he worked the night shift as a security guard.

“Where were you last night?” he asked, zipping his gray hoodie up to his chin.

In my bedroom having secret, mind-blowing sex.

“None of your business.” She ignored his scowl. “Did you give Moretti the money?”

“I’m still alive, aren’t I?”

“What did he say?”

“Relax, will ya?” He yanked the hood over his dark hair. “I took care of it.”

“Seriously? You’re gonna tell me to relax?” She gaped at him. “Manny Moretti is not someone you want to be involved with. Tell me you know that.”

Jamie held out his hands as he backed through the door. “Can we do this later? I’m running late.”

“Wait—”

He flung the door closed with a decisive bang.

Unsettled by Jamie’s strange behavior, she dove back into her research on Moretti with a determination bordering on manic. For dinner, she microwaved a frozen meal and ate it while reading some old newspaper articles she’d found online about Manny.

Shortly after ten o’clock, her cell phone rang. She didn’t recognize the number, so she accepted the call with a touch of wariness.

“Hey, it’s Sasha.”

“Oh, hey, Sasha.” Avery’s spine straightened with her surprise. “What’s up?”

“So, uh, I hate to ask this….”

At Sasha’s timid opening, Avery’s heart pinched. She remembered well the sting to her pride when she needed to ask for a favor.

She jumped in. “You need a place to stay?”

“Would that be all right?” Sasha asked. “It’ll just be this one time—”

“Of course.” Avery closed her notebook. “And you can call anytime. It’s not a problem. I swear.”

Sasha’s relieved sigh carried through the phone.

Avery gave her the building address and apartment number, and when they disconnected, she quickly cleaned up the papers and notebooks she’d spread around the living room while she’d worked.

She hunted up an extra pillow and blankets and was finishing the makeshift bed on the couch when Sasha arrived.

Avery showed Sasha the tiny kitchen and offered her something to eat, but Sasha said she was too tired to stay awake long enough. They talked for a few minutes about nothing in particular, and when an enormous yawn overcame Sasha, Avery moved toward her bedroom, which connected off the main living area.

“My brother is working tonight, so he’ll probably wake you up pretty early when he gets home.” She stepped into her room and flipped on the light. “You can just ignore him, like I do.”

Avery closed her bedroom door on Sasha’s soft laughter.

The next morning, Avery rubbed her eyes as she padded into the living room from her bedroom. On the couch cushions, the blankets she left for Sasha were folded into a neat pile with the pillow stacked on top. Sasha was already gone.

Avery spent the day working on her story. So far, she’d gathered evidence of at least four different illegal schemes.
